Under Windows, software written for the 'classic' Mac OS (i.e. versions 6 through 9) can only be run through software that emulates Macintosh hardware from 1980s and 1990s. The most advanced of these emulator programs is SheepShaver. SheepShaver is no longer supported by its original author, Gwenolé Beauchesne, but minor updates are available from an active support forum at E-Maculation. This page provides a fully functional SheepShaver system that runs Mac OS 9.0.4 (US English version).

Unlike other SheepShaver-based systems, it makes it relatively easy to exchange files between SheepShaver and Windows, and makes it easy to print from Mac OS applications to Windows printers, or to create PDF files on the Windows desktop. The system runs under Windows 7, 8.x and 10 it may work under earlier Windows versions, but I haven't tested it under earlier versions.

To install this system, download and run the MacOS9AppInstaller. (The file is around 400MB in size it contains a 4GB hard disk image file.) Then launch the MacOS9.exe application, either from its folder or from the desktop shortcut that the installer offers to create. Note: Updated 19 March 2020 with a new version of SheepShaver. A version posted 18 August 2019 includes a 4GB image file, not 1GB as in earlier versions. Every file installed or used by the program is inside the program's folder. After uninstalling, any files that may be left over will be in that same folder those files and the folder itself may be safely deleted.Hi! XPF was recommended to me by a list mod to help in installing 10.3 on a beige G3 AIO. I have asked Apple and they tell me that 10.2 will install and run on this Mac just fine. I went to the list in question looking for 10.2. I got a page of very strange code, and no actual dl at all.īut the list mod was very encouraging about the superiority of 10.3 over 10.2, so I tried to dl XPF4. Does anyone know what I might have done wrong in the dl process? I clicked the 'Download now' button, that's all, and all that appeared to be necessary. If I can get hold of a set of 10.2 CDs, do I still need XPF? (Apple says no, just fyi, but if *users* have different actual experience, that's helpful to know.)ģ. (Slightly OT) If I could just go altogether with X I wouldn't ask this, but: Does anyone have an opinion whether 10.3 is really so much better than 10.2 that I need to add to the complication of making the switch? It's going to be tight in the first place, as I need to partition the HD so I can have one side w/ OSX and the other w/ OS9, because I actually do use the built-in floppy and zip drives, both unsupported under all versions of X.

Can't go get a USB floppy drive, because the AIO does not have USB ports, which are required by 10.3. I think this is the version that has worked the best. Finally stable on PowerTower Pro w/Sonnet 800mhz G4 card. Keeps this machine and investment going for the long term. Ryan (the author) has definitely put in some long hours developing this software, and I can tell you that he has come quite a long way. This software actually works quite smoothly compared to a year or so ago (when I couldn't get it to work at all). Ryan is also frequently vocal in the forum associated with this software (which hadn't been the case previously).
